I shook my head and looked down, “I’ve tried many times. I thought I convinced him, but it was all for nothing.”

We were quiet for a moment and the only sound was the rain outside the cave.

He then spoke back in a normal tone, “Maybe you need to approach it in a different way. Sitting here miserable isn’t going to solve your problems.”

I pondered for a few minutes on this. It then started to make sense. I took off my hood. The man gave a curious look at me.

“You’re right. No one ever got things done by moping. I need to find my friend and put a stop to everything. Thank you, sir. Whatever your name is,” I said to him.

“Oh, my apologies, my name is Icarus,” he replied, and held his hand out for a handshake.

I shook his hand, then suddenly was surprised as a memory appeared in my head. I was standing behind Kaido who was standing behind Tana. We made our way to the top and were stopped by what we saw at the end of the hall. Resurrect members ran around the corner and blocked our way. There were about ten of them. I turned around and saw five more members run up the stairs behind us. We were flanked. I started to wonder what happened to the E.T.B. soldiers.

Suddenly, the wall next to the group in front of us exploded with sand that took out most of the Resurrect. A man also jumped out and while still in the air did a spin kick and took out the three that weren’t hit by the sand. It was Icarus. The other group behind us came running up readying to attack.

I put my hands up and yelled, “Slow!”

I slowed down their movements. Kaido jumped over me and drop kicked the closest member making him knock over the rest of the them. I continued time normally as Tana jumped up in with a ball of water energy in her hand.

“Water Blast!” she yelled as a blast of water shot out at the Resurrect taking them out.

I snapped back to reality and saw Icarus was looking at me with confusion.

“Are you alright?” he asked me.

I shook my head to snap out of it, “Yeah, I’m fine. My name is Spex.”

The look on his face changed from curious to shocked.

“I thought you looked familiar. I was on my way to Caedos to find a way back to my home, which is in a different universe, but now that you’re here, maybe you can help,” Icarus said, smiling big.

Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my head and I dropped to my knees. As I was gripping my head, images of Sabre flashed in front of me. He was fighting a giant mech suit and then was killed by someone in an old Dark Army general uniform who was piloting the mech.

Icarus knelt down and asked, “Spex, is something wrong?”

I gritted my teeth in pain and answered, “Yeah, it’s this guy I know Sabre. I think you know him too.”

  “I do,” Icarus responded.

“he’s in trouble.” I told him.

“Isn’t Sabre dead though?” Icarus confusingly questioned.

I answered, “I mean in the past. I don’t know how to explain it, but he needs help.”

Icarus looked concerned and pondered what I just said.

“I need to help him. How do I get to him?” Icarus asked me.

The pain subsided and I my hands off my head. I looked at him then looked around for an answer and could only think of one answer.

“I need to send you into the past. I think I know what to do, though I’ve only done it once,” I answered.

I was nervous about doing it again for some reason.

Icarus tried to find an answer, “Are you going to open a portal?”

I nodded. I put one of my hands up, pointing to another part of the cave, I created a time portal while thinking of Sabre and the giant mech.

I explained to Icarus, “I’ll keep it open and when you’re done, come back through the portal. Also, there is something you should know, but for some reason I can’t think of it right now.”

“It’s fine. I’ll be back,” Icarus replied.

I then added, “One more thing. I don’t know where this is coming from, but if something does happen, and you get stuck there, find me when Tana goes on her Cast Pilgrimage. I can take you the present before your past-self appears in this world. I will help you, even if I don’t understand.”

  “Got it,” Icarus nodded.

Something caught my eye, as I looked over saw crystals that were protruding from the cave wall. They were glowing, like they were reacting to my portal. Icarus then readied himself and jumped through the portal. I put both my hands out and focused on keeping the portal open. I still didn’t know how I was doing this.

Suddenly, a group of bats flew around me then off to the side. They then flew into each other to create a female vampire, bat-looking creature. She was skinny, had pale blueish skin, bat wings attached to the arms, and claws on hands and feet. She had long black hair that was standing up and was waved around with even slightest of movements. The only thing she wore was torn up cloth that covered her chest and waist area.

“How dare you enter my home. You must die!” she exclaimed in a dark, echoing voice.

The vampire quickly lunged towards me. I quickly unsheathed my sword from my back and blocked her attack with one arm. But she didn’t stop, as she was still moving past me. My eyes followed her as she readied to attack me from a new angle. In desperation, I took my hand away, keeping the portal open, grabbed my sword with both hands and slashed at the vampire’s hands. She screeched in pain and fell to the ground. The portal then closed and disappeared.

“Damn it,” I muttered in a worried tone.

The vampire retreated back further into the cave.

“I’ll get you for this!” she yelled.

I decided not to chase her and left the fight at that. After sheathing my sword, I started to think of what I wanted to tell Icarus, then I remembered the last time I opened a portal. Revolver and I temporarily lost our memory somehow after jumping through the portal. I wanted to warn him of that before he left.

“I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to him,” I said to myself.

The pain in my head was completely gone and things started to feel right again. Icarus was right. I needed to get Revolver back, and I knew exactly what to do. The rain let up soon after. I looked back at the crystals that were still glowing. I decided to come back and study them at another time. I then left the cave, and I started walking back on the path, away from Caedos City.

  Chapter 16 – Breakout

The next day, I left the motel that I was staying at. I was in a small town that was on the way called Umbrus Town. It was small motel, but it was convenient. I had a hard time sleeping, but it was better than staying in that cave where I thought I was going to be attacked. The first few hours were spent walking to the assassin base. Vehicles drove by every now and then. It made me want to hitch a ride with one, but I decided against it.

After a few hours of walking and taking breaks, I finally got close to the where the base was. As I got closer, two assassins appeared in front me, their swords at the ready. I stopped and got cautious. I recognized them as Jakob and Wes.

“Spex. You’re coming with us,” Jakob demanded.

I put my hands up over my head as a means of surrender. They began to approach me.

“Okay, fine, as long as you take me to-,” I responded, before Jakob hit me in the stomach with the butt end of their sword.

I was about to fall over in pain before they each grabbed one of my arms and seized me.

“Was that really necessary?” I groveled.

  Wes replied, “Shut up.”

They both pulled me up to the base, and we all entered. We made our way through the halls and were stopped by someone. I got a better look at the person and it was Revolver. I looked at him in shock. He was wearing his assassin’s clothes again, and his hood was up, so I couldn’t see all his face. He looked unhappy to see me.

“We found this one approaching our base, sir,” Wes said.

Revolver replied, “He is a fool then. Take him down t
o the dungeon; we will deal with him later. Make sure to use the NULL restraints.”

“Yes, sir,” they both responded in acknowledgement.

‘Sir?’ I thought in my head.

As we walked by Revolver, I got a look at his face. He looked very unhappy, and he had a black eye. I started to wonder how he got it and why they called him sir. Does he have authority over the other assassins or something now? They brought me down to the dungeons of the basement level and into a cell. One of them held my arms up still while the other locked my wrists with restraints that hung from the middle of the cell. I heard a beep and a locking sound. I looked up and saw buttons and a screen in the middle of the restraints. Wes looked at me with disgust and readied a punch. I tried use my time powers, but it didn’t work. The restraints had NULL technology that cancelled out my powers. His punch at hit me in the face. It hurt bad and I closed my eyes in pain.

Jakob then questioned, “What was that for?”

I opened my eyes mad, but I couldn’t do anything.

Wes replied, “He’s a traitor. Plus, you are the one who hit him in the stomach. I wanted my turn to hit him.”

The assassins then exited the room and shut the cell door. I was alone, and it was quiet. The only light in the room was a bright light that shone down from the grate above me. The restraints were connected to it with a metal chain. I tried to use my time powers again, but nothing was working.

“I hate these things,” I said to myself, though I could barely remember why I hated them.

A memory then flashed before me. I was on the ground in a large room. I looked around and Tana and Kaido were on the ground. They were both injured bad. Tana was struggling to get up. There were also a few dead E.T.B. soldiers on the floor in different areas of the room. Vlayru was tied up against the wall. I remembered that it was him who was captured by the Resurrect. Jessix had just told us that they captured him while he was in Yovan. Made me wonder what Ryuu and Ayla were doing. Something caught my attention, and I looked up to see Jessix standing over me. She had a short sword in both hands and raised it over her head.

“Too bad you couldn’t become a real hero like your weak friends!” she exclaimed with an evil smile.

Tana jumped up and ran towards us. The thought of seeing my friends get killed made me snap. I raised my hand up and used my time powers to freeze time. The NULL must have been disabled or destroyed. I used this opportunity to take down Jessix. I jumped up and pulled Jessix’s sword out of her hand and threw it to the ground then gave her two punches to face then a hard kick to the stomach. I continued time and the force of the attacks sent Jessix backwards and into the wall behind her, creating an impression. She then fell to the floor and was unconscious.

Tana was stopped and was surprised, “Uh, Spex, are you okay?”

I looked at her and sighed, “I am now.”

She looked at Jessix and back at me.

“Did you use time powers to do that?” she questioned.

I nodded, “Yeah. It was awesome, right?”

Kaido replied, fighting to get up, “Yeah. It was in the blink of an eye. I don’t know if I’ll get used to something like that.”

Tana went to help him up, “Kaido, I am sorry too. I’m glad you came to help.”

They both smiled at each other. It made me smile as well. Vlayru made a noise to come help him. I cut the rope that was used and ripped the tap off his mouth.

“Thank the Creator,” He said, while taking deep breathes.

  Tana helped him up.

“I’m glad you are okay, Vlayru,” she said and gave him a hug.

There was then an explosion that sounded like it came from another part of the building.

I blinked, and I was back in the cell. I wondered how long I’d been here. The cell door opened, and Revolver appeared and approached me.

  “Spex,” he said.

“You had to use NULL restraints?” I asked him in a stern tone.

Revolver answered, “Of course. We can’t have you escape. The restraints are an updated version of the original NULL tech. We stole it from Keystone Industries when they sent it to their Central Union branch from their main branch in Prism City. After the Resurrect used the original NULL, it was taken to the government who then destroyed it. it was only recently replicated and improved on by Keystone Industries. It Nullifies elemental powers without weakening and giving you headaches.”

  “Great,” I responded.

It all sounded vaguely familiar somehow, like I had something to do with its destruction.

“Why did you decide to come here?” Revolver questioned.

“I came for you, Revolver,” I answered.

Revolver shook his head, “I thought I told you that your little crusade or whatever was a bad decision. You know what we are trying to do. We want everyone to agree on one thing. To do that, we need to make them agree or kill them.”

“No. That is the wrong thing to do and you know it. Revolver, you know the H.N.A. is bad news. It’s not too late. You can leave them for good and we can get out of here. Come up with a plan to take them down,” I responded.

Revolver chuckled, “Even if I did leave, how could I live that life with the blood that I spilled. You refused to kill anyone, so it’s easy for you to walk away from this.”

“That may be so, but you still should try, right? Do you really want to world to parish?” I replied.

Revolver fell quiet and his smile faded. He pondered for a moment.

“Revolver, think of your family and friends. They will suffer because you didn’t make the right call,” I told him.

Revolver was sill silent for a moment before replying, “How do you know what the right call is?”

I shook my head, “I don’t know. What I do know is that being in the H.N.A isn’t the answer, and I know running away isn’t either. I can’t explain it; I just feel it.”

Revolver was still thinking to himself. Someone else walked in, and Revolver moved off to the side. It was Nether Remnant. He was holding his scythe in one hand. I started to get uneasy and irritated.

“Oh, look the traitor. I hope, you weren’t planning on helping him escape commander Revolver,” Remnant spoke.

‘That answers my question from earlier,’ I thought.

Revolver responded, “No, of course not. I just got promoted. Why would I ruin that?”

  “Indeed,” Remnant agreed.

He approached me and said, “You know, Spex, ever since you joined our ranks, I’ve had this hatred for you. I don’t know why. We also seem to have this connection, you and I.”

I agreed with him. Something about him made my blood boil. I gave him a disgusted look.

Remnant continued, “The only reason why I never tried to kill you or hurt you is because of Lord Sharik. He has great interest in both you and Revolver. You are needed for reasons I don’t even know. You betrayed us, Spex. For that I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if you died.”

He then raised his scythe ready to swing. My heart sank in fear.

“I’m a good talker, so I’m sure I can convince him that killing you was a good idea,” He continued.

I closed my eyes. Wishing my powers were working. I heard metal clashing together. I slowly opened my eyes. I saw, to my surprise, Revolver blocking and holding back Remnant’s scythe with his sword. He pushed the scythe back, then kicked Remnant back hard in the chest. Remnant fell to the ground in pain.

“What is the meaning of this, Revolver?” Remnant questioned, angerly.

  Revolver didn’t speak.

  “Damn you!” he yelled.

“Once a traitor, always a traitor,” Revolver said to him.

He turned to me and cut the restraints, setting me free.

  “Revolver,” I said to him.

Revolver smirked, “I’ll be damned if I see another person, I care about get killed. You were right, Spex. I don’t want to see the world perish. Now let’s go, quickly.”

  I smiled back, “Yeah, let
s go.”

We both then ran out of the cell. Revolver grabbed my sword that was in lock up with other prisoner belongings and tossed it to me. I put it on my back, and we continued to run through the base. We passed a connecting hallway that led to up the living quarters. I stopped and looked down it. Revolver stopped and looked at me confused.

“What are you doing? Let’s go, Spex!” he ordered.

“Wait, I need something out of our room,” I responded.

I ran down the hall, and Revolver ran after me. We went up the stairs to the third floor and got to our room, but two assassins appeared from the other side of the hall. They studied us for moment.
